DC Gluten Free News Round Up

Now that the weather is warm, there’s plenty of reasons to get out and explore some new gluten free options in the District (and beyond). Here are some of my latest discoveries:

1. You can find Happy Tart Bakery AND Stumptown Coffee at Killer E.S.P. in Old Town Alexandria

Displaying photo.JPG

I spent two glorious hours reading in an oversized leather chair at Killer E.S.P yesterday. With an Americano made from Stumptown Coffee, and a chewy and buttery chocolate chip cookie from Happy Tart Bakery, I couldn’t have been happier! They carry tarts, cookies, and Nutella pastries (pictured above), all gluten free and wonderful indulgences. As long as they keep the sugary treats coming, this will be my favorite coffee shop.

2. Skinny Girl “Tasty Nutrition Bars” are all gluten free, and actually tasty!

I picked up a box of the Chocolate Peanut Butter and Sea Salt bars at Target, and was surprised at how tasty they were! Usually I brace for the worst when trying a protein bar, but these are chewy, sweet, and a great on-the-go breakfast option.

3. DC Dosa at Whole Foods Foggy Bottom

Dosas are a great healthy and gluten free alternative to a burrito or wrap sandwich. Made out of lentil puree, you can get it filled with everything from potatoes to spiced vegetables. Now you can find a DC Dosa stand in the prepared foods section in the Foggy Bottom Whole Foods.

Happy eating!

DC Gluten Free News Round Up

It seems like everything is coming up gluten free these days. Like this pizza from Faccia Luna in Alexandria. Here are some exciting gluten free events and food coming to DC:

1. Tabula Rasa on Barracks Row will be hosting a gluten free biergarden event to benefit the Celiac Disease Foundation

Talk about a fundraiser I can get behind! Five gluten free beers and snacks, with all proceeds going to a good cause. October 5th from 6-10 pm.

2. Dough Bakery’s first pop-up stand

There will be gluten free pop tarts. Enough said. Go there! Saturday, September 21st and Sunday, October 3rd from 11:00am to 3:00pm at 731 8th St SE, Washington DC.

3. Urbana just debuted three gluten free pizzas last weekend

Finally, gluten free pizza in Dupont! While it’s not on their online menu yet, Eater reported that they are now serving margherita, quattro stagioni, and funghi pizza for an extra $2. You can view their new menu on Scribd.

4. Custom Fuel offers do-it-yourself gluten free pizza

You choose your cheese and toppings and they will slap them on top of a gluten free crust and bake it while you wait. You’ll have to pay an extra $2.50 for it, but it sure beats a frozen one!

5. One of my favorite restaurants, Lincoln, now has a gluten free menu

While there aren’t a ton of gluten free substitute meals (like pasta or bread) – you will not be disappointed getting shrimp and grits and their famous kale salad.

What did I miss? Anything else gluten free going on in the district?

DC Gluten Free News Round Up

A few new things happening around DC. I have to say that I’m pretty satisfied with the number of places that I can get tacos in the District at this point – can I get a gluten free bakery, bagel, or sandwich shop to open at some point soon? Someone get on that.

1. The Chupacabra food truck now has a store front on H Street

With a ton of gluten free and vegan options on the menu, now you don’t have to chase down a restaurant on wheels to get some squash and eggplant tacos, chicken tortilla soup or fried yucca.

2. DC Gluten Free Expo is coming June 2

dc gluten free expo

I had a great time at the expo last year, and can’t wait to see what they’ll have this year. So many new products have come out and I’m excited to mingle and gorge myself on samples. This year I’m making a promise to myself to slow down though since I left the expo with a tummy ache last year due to over indulgence. If you want to burn some calories before the expo, you can also run in the Making Tracks for Celiacs Run/Walk in Arlington in the morning.

3. Lavagna in Capitol Hill has gluten free pasta

I’ve been to Lavagna twice for brunch, but now I’m going to have to stop by for dinner and mangia on some pasta. Thanks to Gluten Free NOVA Girl for the tip off on this one!

Let me know if you know of anything else coming up around the DMV!

Not cool “The Book for Dangerous Women.” Not cool.

When I saw “The Book for Dangerous Women: A Guide to Modern Life” on the shelf at the library, I was kind of excited. I’d flipped through “The Dangerous Book for Boys” and “The Daring Book for Girls,” and I thought that they were cute, and encouraged kids to take risks, go outside, and be self-sufficient. I’m all for that.

I checked the book out, and flipped through the encyclopedia-like pages. It wasn’t the most enlightening thing I’ve ever read, but it was fun and had what I thought was good advice on some topics.

Then, when I got to the G section, this is what I found:

dangerous book for women

Apparently the authors have confused gluten intolerance or celiac disease with the Atkins Diet. Life’s too short to go gluten free? Actually it’s more like my life will be too short if I don’t maintain a gluten free diet, like the millions of people who need to stick to the diet to keep their bodies healthy.

I don’t know how stuff like this makes it to print.

1. Mari Vanna Russian restaurant is now serving lunch from 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The kids’ pre fixe menu ($15) features gluten-free alphabet mac-and-cheese. Hopefully they don’t strictly enforce an age limit for that.

2. Sticky Fingers bakery in Columbia Heights is rumored to be applying for a liquor license. Which means there is the distinct possibility that I could have brunch there and eat gluten free french toast and drink beer. Winning.

3. Sweet Diablo in Dupont serves “The Best Chocolate Cake in the World”: a flourless, gluten-free confection that features thin, crunchy chocolate meringue layers filled with a creamy chocolate mousse and a ganache top. Although according to one blogger, it’s not that great…

4. Reston burger joint The Counter is debuting a gluten-free menu (according to Eater). In my book the most important thing on the menu are the gluten free chili cheese fries. But you can also build your own gluten-free burger, and offers some predesigned options that fit the category, like a Cranberry and Avocado Turkey Burger on a gluten-free bun. The restaurant will also offer gluten-free milkshakes, Tweason’s Ale from Dogfish Head, and wine.

5. Newton’s Noodles will be opening downtown in June. Customers will have a choice of rice gluten free noodles or soba, plus a choice of sauce, proteins (shrimp, scallops, beef, chicken and tofu are all available) and vegetables.

6. Restaurant Eve provides a gluten-free tasting menu (in the Tasting Room) as well as very good gluten-free bread baked on site, with 24 hours’ notice. More on where to find a gluten free tasting menu on Chowhound.

Recommendations for a Gluten Free Inauguration Weekend

This is my first inauguration in DC, and boy am I excited! There’s a buzz of excitement in the air and as hundreds of thousands of people descend upon the District, I thought I’d compile a few recommendations for gluten free travelers!

1. Eat like the Obamas

On the following list of the Obama’s favorite restaurants,I recommend you try these gluten free options:

#4: Fries at Five Guys

#5: My favorite kale salad from Lincoln

#9: Tacos from Oyamel

#18: Cupcake at Georgetown Cupcakes

2. Try a specialty inauguration cocktail

154 bars in DC will be open until 4:30am during inauguration weekend. Way past my bedtime – but here’s a map of where they are!

3. Go to brunch on Monday

If you haven’t experienced a true DC brunch, this is your opportunity! There are quite a few restaurants opening on Monday for brunch, and my recommendation is Firefly in Dupont, since they have a gluten free menu, and are a bit removed from the action on The Mall, but still very accessible. Get yourself some grits, drink some mimosas, and celebrate four more years!

1. Tickets are now available for the DC Gluten Free Gala

This year I am finding a way to pay the $250 to go to this. A cocktail reception and a three course meal, plus getting dressed up and wining and dining in a completely gluten free environment sounds like total bliss. (Although what’s with the poached pear for dessert? Can we get Happy Tart in there or something?)

2. B.J.’s Restaurant and Brewhouse coming to Tyson’s Corner

According to Eater DC, there will soon be a B.J.’s restuarant opening. Their gluten free menu has thin crust pizza and broccoli cheddar soup! And gluten free beer!

And (stop the presses) a gluten free chocolate chip pizookie! It’s a pizza-sized cookie topped with ice cream. Completely unnecessary in its size, but perfect for the moment you give up your New Year’s resolution.

3. Gluten free pasta making class from LivingSocial

There’s still time to sign up for one of these classes, where you will learn how to make gluten free ravioli!  I’ll be going to the January 23rd class!

1. Meridian Pint is hosting a Crispin Cider dinner on 12/4

I love me some hard cider. The chefs at Meridian Pint in Columbia Heights are going to be pairing five Crispin ciders, including the new Bourbon barrel-aged release “Bird On A Wire” (bring it on!), with gluten-free seasonal dishes like steamed bronzini with kaffir lime and lemongrass. Plus they’ll have lavender honey goat cheese cake for dessert.

I’ll be there, and you should come too!

You can purchase tickets on Eventbrite here: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/4804647831

2. A new DC gluten free restaurant-rating blog launched

I’m all for spreading the gluten free love to every inch of the District, so I’m excited to see a new blogger who is providing rankings and reviews of restaurants in DC from a celiac’s perspective. Check her out at out Glutie Foodie!

3. The Gluten Free Muffin Man is now selling in Columbia Heights and Mt. Pleasant

Pick yourself up a walnut date bar or cookie at Columbia Heights Coffee from a new gluten free baker in town: The Gluten Free Muffin Man!

Celiacs unite! My take on the gluten free community

I love the gluten free community – in person and online.

When I meet someone in person who has Celiac Disease we have an instant friendship and endless topics to discuss. It’s so refreshing to talk to someone who understands exactly what you’re talking about – someone to gripe with, to share tips with, ask for advice, and to try new gluten free foods with. As much as non-celiacs can try to empathize – really, they just can’t fully understand.

The online celiac community is such a great group of people. Some are experts in the kitchen, some are advocates for research, some review gluten free companies and products, and some just wax poetic about the trials of living gluten free. Every day I learn something new from the celiac community, and can’t imagine navigating this disease without the help of my fellow bloggers and tweeters.

I’ve got love for celiacs – but our community has also come under attack from many people. Those who think that we’re faking it – that Celiac Disease doesn’t need to be taken seriously. Companies that exploit the gluten free label to increase profits (I’m lookin’ at you – California Pizza Kitchen and Dominos!). Or celebrities who don’t realize that they are harming people with a legitimate disease when they casually adopt a gluten free diet in an attempt to lose weight.

So what can we do about it?

  1. Focus on Celiac Disease, not gluten-free eating.

While it’s much easier to talk in terms of “gluten free” foods – I think it’s really important for us to move toward a “Safe for Celiacs” mentality. If we can get greater recognition/understanding of Celiac Disease, and the difference between gluten intolerance and Celiac disease, I think that we will all be better off. While I believe there definitely is a spectrum of levels of gluten intolerance – if we can work toward making foods and restaurants safe for celiacs, then they will be safe for everyone eating gluten free!

  1. Don’t shut up.

I love seeing the celiac community united in fighting something that we feel is hurting us. I loved the flurry of tweets at Domino’s or the barrage of WTF blog posts on our latest celebrity “spokespeople”.  By making our voices heard, we can make sure that we’re letting them know that it’s not okay, and that we will not support them as a community. (While I’m on the topic – go sign the petition on the NFCA Amber Designation).

  1. Bring on the men!

While Celiac Disease is more present in women than men, I’d love to see some more celiac studs join our forces! I think in some ways “gluten free” has become too closely associated with girly bakeries (not that I’m not hopelessly devoted to Babycakes), complicated recipes, or general healthy-living/dieting. I think having a few more good men on our side would help diversify opinions and bring new perspectives. So – if you have a gluten dude of your own in your life – tell him to start a blog or join the Twittersphere!

What do you think the celiac community could benefit from? Where do we go from here?
