Katz Gluten Free Sampler

Look what I got in the mail today!  My sampler pack from Katz Gluten Free!

A friend had told me about this special offer from Katz, and I only paid $7 for this whole boxful of goodies!

Coupons!

It includes one slice each of  Whole Grain Bread, Sliced Challah Bread,  White Bread and Wholesome Bread.  Also included are a Dinner Roll, a sample Cookie and Rugelech, and one Sample Slice of Marble Cake.

I had the chocolate chip cookie after lunch, as I skimmed through The G Free Diet.  I kind of hate Elizabeth Hasselbeck because of every single thing she says on The View, but I can appreciate the work that was put into this book, and it seems to have a lot of practical advice.

The cookie was like one of those mini Famous Amos ones that they have in vending machines?  Kind of crunchy, but with lots of chocolate chips.  Not exactly the ooey-gooey-doughy type of cookie that I prefer, but it did bring me back to my college days.

I’ll give a run down of the other samples, and share anything particularly non-idiotic that Elizabeth says in the coming weeks!

Eco-Planet Organics Instant Hot Cereal

I was in a ridiculously long line at Whole Foods, looking for something to amuse me, when I came up to a discarded grocery item that I had to reclaim for myself.  It was eco-planet instant hot cereal!  It has “more protein, fiber, and Omega-3s than any regular oatmeal – with less sugar,” so I figured that it could be a great alternative to my usual oatmeal in the morning.

Orphan cereal

I took this little guy home and whipped him up with some cranberries (left over from stringing them on our Christmas tree), cinnamon, milk, and maple syrup.

Yum!

It’s a great quick and satisfying snack, or a light breakfast.  Plus it’s got to be good for you with all of the super-grains it has in it (amaranth, chicory root, flaxseed, chia flour, brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet).

I’m definitely going to bring a few of these individually-wrapped packets with me next time I travel (certainly beats hotel powdered eggs).

Get it here.

Sunday Treat at Astoria Market

Today Nick and I ventured up to the Astoria Market at the Bohemian Hall Beer Garden, which we only knew had “an eclectic assortment of wares” and some kind of food and drink.
Well, it certainly was…something.  Basically just an elementary school gym-sized room with about 30 vendor tables.  There were weird Christmas decorations, some cool jewelry, art, hand-made cards, and some gluten-free pumpkin chocolate-chip muffins!  I believe that the name of the vendor was Elsa-Joy Baked Goods, but I can’t seem to find any information on it anywhere online. Maybe they’ll post about it on their blog soon.

Even though the muffins were extremely, ridiculously over-priced at $3.50 for a very small muffin and $7 for a mini-loaf, I felt that I had to try one.  If not for any other reason than supporting gluten-free vendors! The only other food option was from The Chocolate Swirl, which had truffles that got my hopes up.  But they said that they weren’t gluten-free 😦

After making a pot of coffee, I dug in:

Soooo… it was good.  The best part was the sticky top and the big, rich chocolate chips.  I have been missing the richness of gluten-filled pumpkin bread – like the 440 calorie slice from Starbucks I used to get.  I remember it being so dense and filled with moist, pumpkin flavor.  This muffin was a little pumpkin-y, but not like I remembered.  I might have to challenge myself to make my own pumpkin bread before autumn is over.

Now I’m relaxing, and popped open a St. Peter’s Sorghum Ale.  The first time I had this beer was at Peculier Pub on Bleecker Street – and the second time was not the charm.  Maybe the first time I had it I was wooed by the cool bottle?

For some reason this beer tastes skunked to me.  It could be because I’m not used to drinking beer nowadays, but it just isn’t enjoyable for me.  I’ll stick with Redbridge from now on.

Dean and Deluca’s “Pumpkin Potion”

Yesterday I got my first real dose of Christmas in the city.  We went in to get some ingredients for dinner from Whole Foods, and a little present to send my dad (to make up for abandoning him on Thanksgiving).  But there was so much to see that we ended up making an afternoon of it.  Who can take a quick trip to the grocery store when you get off the train and see this view of Central Park?

So we headed to Dean and Deluca to see if they had anything for my dad, and to give us an excuse to get coffee ourselves.  Usually I kind of hate going there a little bit, because they have all of the best baked goods in the city and I can’t have ANY of it.  So, being in the holiday spirit and all, I opted for the “Pumpkin Potion” made with soy milk.  It’s a blend of something pumpkin, and chai, and I think magic – because this thing was soooooo good.  It made Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks look like car wash hot chocolate (what? they didn’t serve hot chocolate at your car wash?)  It was incredibly frothy, and even though I’m not usually a fan of chai, the spiced and subtle pumpkin flavor was really amazing.  Almost made me not envy the line of people getting cupcakes and pastries.  Almost.

We also got a few of their Origin Chocolate bars, which didn’t make it home whole.  In our defense, it was a long subway ride.  Other gluten free food options at D&D include:

  • Siggi’s Yogurt (I’ve had the Orange Ginger and it was decent)
  • Macaroons (sometimes they have packaged ones, but the sales people will never give me a straight answer about the ones in their display case).  Plus, if you’re in the area you might as well get your macaroons here).
  • Nut mix and cranberry nut mix
  • Soups (they had butternut squash when I went, that is gluten free.  But check for other varieties)
  • Larabars (at the SoHo location, not at the Rockefellar Center location)
  • Tons of candy and artisan chocolates
  • Terra chips and popcorn (at SoHo location)
  • At the SoHo location they also have a lot of prepared foods, sushi (but no soy sauce), cheeses, and fresh fruits and veggies.

On the way there we saw the big tree getting prepped for the lighting in Rockefellar Center. Right now it looks like a construction zone, but soon it will be all gussied up and ready for Christmas.

Apologies for those of you who can’t try the yummies at Dean and Deluca.  For those of you in the city – D&D moved to 48th Street a couple of months ago.  It’s much more discrete now (not even on Google Maps yet):

Dean and Deluca

On W 48th Street between 6th and 5th Ave.

Or 560 Broadway (right outside the Prince Street subway)

Frozen Lara Bars? Genius!

Look for the polka dots!

Have you seen the new Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Chip Brownie, Carrot Cake, and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip flavors of Lara Bars?

Ever since I saw them on another blog (which one is escaping me now) – I was on the look out for these in my local Whole Foods and health stores, but for weeks they evaded me.  I couldn’t even find them online!

Then, just when I thought hope was lost, I found them at Sunac (26th Street and 6th Avenue).  I scooped up a cookie dough and a brownie (they still don’t have in the peanut butter ones, sigh.)

So chock-full of chocolate, and only FOUR ingredients!  Makes a girl almost feel like it could be a little tiny bit good for you?

THEN – I saw the genius idea to FREEZE them!  Why didn’t I think of that?

So I put one in the freezer at work and ate it while walking to the subway on my way home on Friday.  Nothing better to put a nice cherry on top of a work week 🙂

Next up – freezing it and mushing it up into some vanilla ice cream.

Also, finding the peanut butter ones!

Overpriced drink times two

I caved.  After my Saturday $6 Jamba Juice, I paid three dollars for this pomegranate Borba water!  But it looked so refreshing and I’d just finished my run – plus it said it would purify my pores and “allow your body to help skin regenerate its natural support system and improve clarity.”

Did I think it would work?  Not at all.  But… it came with it’s OWN LITTLE CUP!  It was too cute to pass up.

But I’m glad I went for this impulse purchase because it was delicious!  Not at all like Vitamin Water (puke) or Gatorade (vom).  It was fresh and satisfying, and didn’t make my tongue feel weird like those *other* drinks.

I’m not going to make this a regular beverage – but it sure is a tasty treat!

Bragg’s Liquid Aminos

This stuff is good.  I use it instead of dressing on my salads (great if you don’t want to read the ingredients on a million bottles of dressing to see if they’re gluten free, plus it has ZERO calories).  It’s like a light soy sauce mixed with balsamic vinegar, but with a lot less sodium – plus it has 16 amino acids!

You can get a free sample sent to you here!

P.S. – Having thoughts of ordering the giant jug…

Tribute to Gluten Free Chex

Over Memorial Day weekend, in a giant Giant supermarket in Easton, PA, I found my long-lost hidden friend – CINNAMON CHEX!!  I haven’t been able to find them in Queens or Manhattan, and there they were!

These must have been recently re-engineered, because they are more delicious than ever (seems like they put more of the chocolate or cinnamon flavor on the chex).  I love that they are certified gluten free, I love that they are crunchy and snackable, and I love that there are four whole varieties that you can mix and match and make into recipes!

Chex Pumpkin Pie Crunch, Lemon-Rosemary Crunch, Deviled Chex Mix, Buffalo Chex Mix….
The possibilities are mind-bogglingly endless!!  Get some gluten free Glutino pretzels, or some nuts, or some popcorn, and you can run WILD!

CHEX GLUTEN-FREE INDEX

My favorite – Chex Muddy Buddies (or puppy chow, as I like to call it :))

Breaking news – just saw that there are STRAWBERRY CHEX!?!?! Maybe they got discontinued, I sure hope not.

I MUST GET SOME NOW!!

And the hunt begins…

**Update: strawberry chex were discontinued in February.  Why do bad things happen to good people?!

Product Plug – Foods By George

My local natural store in Astoria, Sai Organics, just started carrying a few products from Foods by George.  The company is based in Mahwah, NJ, so their products should start showing up in more stores in the area.

First on my list to try were the Cinnamon and Current English Muffins.

First of all, I was stunned by the low calorie count in these babies – only 220 for a HUGE muffin.  This thing is like two hockey pucks stuck together – only much more delicious and less hard and plastic.  They were $5.49 for four muffins, but sooooooo worth it!  They have the exact texture of English muffins, only BIGGER!

I’m sure these would be pretty simple to make, because they only have a few ingredients, but it’s the guar gum that gives them that great chewy bite.

I made some honey cinnamon butter and slathered it on a toasted muffin.  (2 T softened butter, 2 T honey, 1 tsp cinnamon).  I also tried one with peanut butter, and one with normal butter, and I’m thinking of putting cream cheese on the last one I have.

Sai Organics also started carrying their little personal-pan pizzas and pizza crusts.  I hope they get the crumb cake in though.

Yumyumyum.

Match-up: Primal Strips vs. Stonewall’s Vegan Jerky

I know what you’re thinking – there is more than one type of vegan “beef” jerky?  Yes.

And you’re actually recommending them as something I should eat?  Yes.  (If you are vegetarian, but still enjoy salty protein-filled meat-imitating snacks)

But Anna, whatever jerky should I choose?

No worries, I’m here to help.  DING DING DING – let the match up begin!

First up: Primal Strips

Texas BBQ and Hickory Smoked are Gluten Free - note the handy icon in the upper right of the package

Buy me.

Primal Strips are truly amazing.  A feat of food engineering.  I don’t understand how those food scientists could make soy taste and feel so much like dehydrated meat. Seeing as I haven’t eaten meat in about four years, this is about as primal as my eating gets.  These strips are only 80-90 calories each, and pack about 10-12 grams of protein each.  They’re also almost fat free, and have no cholesterol.  They’re perfect for a mid-afternoon snack (and even give that guilty-pleasure salt satisfaction, without eating a bag of chips).  These are super chewy, fun to eat, and have a ton of meat-ish, BBQ flavor.

I’ve been eating Primal Strips for a few months now, so when I saw that the store across from my office started carrying them I was super excited.  They also started carrying Stonewall’s Jerquee.  So I thought – what’s better than one kind of vegan gf jerky than TWO KINDS?  Pretty much nothing.

So I picked up a package of Stonewall’s Jerquee and started snacking.  This jerky is in little nuggets rather than a strip.

Nuggets

These, however, were not the primal experience I was seeking.  With such pleasant olde time wild west mascot, you’d think that the product would live up to the packaging.  (They also have about 12 different flavors, which was exciting to me).  However, the package of Teriyaki jerquee that I had tasted like dog food.  It had a grainy texture, unpleasant dog food/stale smell, and left my mouth drier than Cheetos and cardboard combined.  I forced myself to eat about half the package (it cost $2.99 so I couldn’t bring myself to just chuck it).  But then I had to give up, drink some water, and throw them out.

*Sidenote – what’s with the spelling of jerquee?  Makes my skin crawl just typing it.

Heavyweight Champion = PRIMAL STRIPS!

So, if the thought of vegan jerky doesn’t repulse you – go get some!  They’re available at Whole Foods (near the register at my store).

Don’t get Stonewalls Jerquee.  Unless you run out of dog food.
