Meryienda cookies

I was so excited to try cookies from the adorable Elvira at Meryienda Gluten Free Bake Shop . While she’s new to the bakery business, you’d never know it from the amazing chewy cookies she’s created. I’m definitely a “thick and chewy” rather than a “thin and crunchy” kind of cookie-lover, so I was excited to see that they were nice and plump when I opened my package.

cookies

You know you’ve found a superior gluten free baked good when you find yourself saying “How did she do that?” after you try it. That and the fact that I had to force myself to freeze the cookies so I had a chance at not eating them all in one day.

The oatmeal raisin were by far my favorite. They were full of whole rolled oats and sunflower seeds (which I think were the secret ingredient – when they bake they get all covered in brown sugar and add a great crunch to each bite).

You can order online, or have them delivered within 24 hours if you live in Manhattan. It’s times like this when I miss living in the city…cookies on demand!

Do you have a “secret ingredient” that you put in your cookies?

Snickerdoodle blondies

My coworkers are lucky people. I’m bringing them these snickerdoodle blondies today AND they get to work with me on a daily basis 😉

Gluten free snickerdoodle blondies (Adapted from Chocoloate-Covered Katie)

  • 1 1/2 cups chickpeas (1 can, drained and rinsed) (250g)
  • 3 T almond butter
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1-2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp baking soda
  • heaping 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (I used the half Splenda blend, so you can up to 3/4 cup)
  • 1-2 T milk (I used almond)
  • 1/4 cup ground flax (20g)
  • 2 and 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Blend all ingredients except milk in a food processor, then add in milk until it’s very smooth. Scoop into a greased (or tinfoil-lined) 8×8 pan (I used my weird IKEA pan). Bake for 35 minutes.

If I could make these again, I would have never baked them. The dough was so crazy delicious, and no raw eggs. The blondies are good, but the dough – I could eat with a spoon all day. Would be great mixed into vanilla ice cream too I think.

Ian’s cookie buttons – eat like a kid

Even though I have a grown up job, I still tend to eat kid snacks throughout the day. When 3pm rolls around my brain gives me a couple of options: 1) eat about 50 jelly bellies from the communal jar 2) sit around and whine about how hungry I am until I go home 3) find a snack. Lately I’ve been loving the cinnamon cookie button pouches from Ian’s. They’re single serving packs of little crunchy cookies that satisfy my need to munch.

The cinnamon and ginger in them gives them a ton of flavor, and while I wouldn’t exactly say they’re packed with nutrients, they’re definitely better than the Jelly Bellies.

Next up on my list to try are the not-so-healthy chocolate covered wafer bits.

Something I’m NOT going to try? These weird-looking egg and maple breakfast sandwiches. No thank you.

But the cookie buttons? Yum!

Gluten free at Grey Market DC

Yesterday I went to my first Grey Market. It was way-the-heck up in Columbia Heights/Petworth, and also in a small basement of a corner store. It kind of felt like the Dirty Dancing set where all of the workers danced, but filled with food vendors.

There were mostly baked goods up for sale, with adorable mini pop tarts, cupcakes, and Halloween-themed cookies. So, not much for me to sample. On their products page, it looked like there would be a few gluten free vendors there, but I only saw one: Sweet Nuttings. Maybe I missed the other ones in the chaos…

This place has a great bakery concept: focus on nuts, and let them each shine in their own dedicated cookie.

I got one of each.

The pistachio one was my favorite I think, but they were all delicious. They had a rich, buttery texture, and tasted like an amplified version of the nut.

How gorgeous is that cookie? I wish I’d bought a dozen.

Sadly I can’t find a website for them, but they have an email address: sweetnuttings@gmail.com.

After Grey Market, we headed over to The Heights, which I’m only mentioning because they had the most delicious Maple Squash and Sage soup ever.

It’s vegan and gluten free, and tastes like Thanksgiving. I guarantee that this will wet your whistle for Turkey Day. The Heights also has an amazing happy hour with $4.25 glasses of wine (dangerous).

Good Things Sunday

Some good things from this weekend:

1.  Floating down the Shenandoah River in a tube with a box of wine fun friends.

Complete with some gf traveling snacks in the form propel and coconut water (for hydration), an apple, string cheese, sweet potato chips, and gf pretzel sticks. Oh, and a Larabar, you know, just in case I got lost and needed it for survival.

2.  Awesome friends who bring you gluten free treats for the car ride.  And not just any gf treats, but a super tasty cookie from Hoff & Holmes.  I will be finding them at the Grey DC Market soon, because this cookie was buttery, chewy, and may turn you into a cookie monster.

Me want cookie

3.  The perfect way to start a morning. Coffee, crossword, and some tunes courtesy of Spotify.

Now off to bottomless mimosa brunch at Vinoteca.  Yes, life is good.

New Cascadia Bakery – Portland

I have so many posts to make from my trips that I don’t even know where to begin.  But, I suppose the most impressive place that I went should go first.

After a thrilling trip to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, where I kicked some butt in old school video games, I headed to the one spot in Portland that was a must-go gluten free place…

New Cascadia Traditional ” The Gluten Free Artisans”

What a pretentious fitting name.

We had just missed sandwich time, which they serve until 3pm, so that was disappointing.

But they had so many other choices that I had to try a few things, one for now and one for later.

For now = asiago bagel with cream cheese.

When was the last time that you could order one bagel from a store, and have them make it for you the way you like?  For me, probably about six years.

It was definitely a great bagel, but I think I may have lost my bagel lust somewhere along the way.  It just doesn’t do the same thing it did for me in high school when I got a bagel with butter on it nearly every day after school (oh the shame).

For later =this amazing pizza with asparagus, mushrooms, blue cheese, and hazelnuts.

Yeah – who knew about the deliciousness of hazelnuts on a pizza?

I ate this for dinner, and then as a snack, and then as another dinner.  I could have eaten the whole thing in one sitting though, but it was really rich, so I managed to hold off.

The only thing lacking at New Cascadia was the customer service.  The girl behind the counter looked like she wanted to kill me every time I asked a question, and heaven forbid I ask for my bagel toasted.  But luckily their food made up for it.   I could have spent $100 on food here easily – blueberry pie, fresh bread, scones, cookies – you name it, they had it.

Redemption for Sticky Fingers Bakery – Cookie Win

After a less than impressive trip to Sticky Fingers Bakery for a cupcake, I decided to give them another shot this weekend.  This time I had a laser focus on getting a chocolate chip cookie.

When I got there, however, there were none to be found in the case.  Only those darned dry cupcakes.   But then I asked the nice girl there if they had any, and she quickly retrieved one from the back room (not sure why they weren’t out…)

So I forked over my $2.25 and headed out to peruse the farmers market. Nothing like looking at rows and rows of vegetables while eating something made of 80% sugar and butter 😉

This cookie provided redemption for any wrong that Sticky Fingers could have done in the past.  It was more crispy than I usually like my cookies (which is just a bit more baked than straight-up dough), but the flavor was great.  Chock-full of brown sugar and so buttery it immediately greased up the brown paper bag (yum?).  Plus it reminded me of those giant bakery cookies that are sold at Panera or Starbucks that I usually drool over.

I ate a big chunk off, and saved the rest for when I had coffee in hand later, for the dunkability factor.

Now I will give Sticky Fingers my stamp of approval.  Steer away from the cupcakes, but crash head on into the cookies.

Kookie Karma

I love when a gluten free company is also hip.  I haven’t seen cookies from Kookie Karma in many places, but they are some of the best gluten free cookies I have ever had.

They’re better than Lara Bars cookie dough…

They’re better than Enjoy Life’s cookies…

And they are certainly better than Glow chocolate chip cookies (although I do appreciate their design sense) …

Kookie Karma holistic chocolate chip cookies are ridiculously moist (probably due to the almond butter) and have great texture (due to the coconut and chia seeds).  Plus the dark chocolate chips are big (and if you put them by your computer fan, like I did, then they are also melty).  Plus with 8 grams of protein these are a much better alternative to Betty Crocker.

Feeling Jovial

What a way to be welcomed into the office on a Monday morning!  A package of free pasta and cookies from Jovial Foods!  I love their tag line, “inherently good”, as well as this message on the back of the cookies:

“Cookies should bring joy to everyone.”

Peanuts!

Thanks to Sure Foods Living for hosting this give away!

I’ve never seen fusilli-shaped gluten free pasta, so I’m very excited to try this out.  I might have to make this asparagus pasta recipe on their website.

I tried out one of the Fig Newton-esque cookies, and it was really satisfying!  It has a buttery, crumbly texture, and I love that they’re packaged in pairs – that means that I can’t down the whole package at once!

Katz Gluten Free Sampler

Look what I got in the mail today!  My sampler pack from Katz Gluten Free!

A friend had told me about this special offer from Katz, and I only paid $7 for this whole boxful of goodies!

Coupons!

It includes one slice each of  Whole Grain Bread, Sliced Challah Bread,  White Bread and Wholesome Bread.  Also included are a Dinner Roll, a sample Cookie and Rugelech, and one Sample Slice of Marble Cake.

I had the chocolate chip cookie after lunch, as I skimmed through The G Free Diet.  I kind of hate Elizabeth Hasselbeck because of every single thing she says on The View, but I can appreciate the work that was put into this book, and it seems to have a lot of practical advice.

The cookie was like one of those mini Famous Amos ones that they have in vending machines?  Kind of crunchy, but with lots of chocolate chips.  Not exactly the ooey-gooey-doughy type of cookie that I prefer, but it did bring me back to my college days.

I’ll give a run down of the other samples, and share anything particularly non-idiotic that Elizabeth says in the coming weeks!
