Eataly…gluten free?

You might call me a glutton for gluten punishment, but I love going to Eataly.  It’s right by my office, and it’s such a unique place.  But, the majority of their food is bread-based (pizza, pasta, bread, pastries).  Until this weekend, I hadn’t actually eaten at Eataly, only picked up some of Mario Batali’s pizza sauce and gotten gelato.  This time, I was determined to have something at one of their restaurant stations with the gorgeous marble bars.  I obviously nixed the meat station, and since I was planning on eating later, the Verdure vegetable bar seemed to be the right choice.

On the recommendation of the friendly waiter, we got the acorn squash with black lentils and pearl onions ($12), as well as the salad of the day, which had artichokes, green olives, and roasted red peppers ($18).  The acorn squash was definitely the star of the show, and the black lentils were really well seasoned (?), well I don’t know if it was seasoning but they were really flavorful.  Plus, I love adorable pearl onions and I’m committing myself to putting them in a dish at some point.  While both dishes were totally overpriced, you can’t beat the lively yet homey atmosphere.  Plus, the waiter filled my two glasses of pinot grigio almost to the brim, so I was happy as a clam.

Since I didn’t want to chug my second glass of wine, but wanted to go exploring the marketplace – I took advantage of their open-drinking policy and took my glass of wine with me for the walk.

Along the way I was surprised to see a few labeled gluten free options!  Like this farinata!  Also, what the heck is farintata!?  It looked to me like polenta, with rosemary in it.  You just add water and bake it in a pan.  Mayyybe I’ll try it one day.

Since almost everything in Eataly is pure Italian and not labeled in English, I was surprised to see this giant sign above their chocolate bar.  Which, by the way, features a chocolate fountain!  They either dip biscotti in it, or just put some of it in a little cup and you can drink it (sinful).  I’ve been surprised sometimes that chocolate truffles contain wheat, so it’s great to know that this whole stand is gf.  Pick up a cappucino and you’re all set for dessert.  I didn’t want to spoil my dinner though.

See at the bottom? "All of our products are gluten free." 🙂

I picked up something for my dad, some spinach for my Mario Batali pizza, and more sauce.  Finished my wine on the way to the checkout, and headed home relaxed and rejuvenated (and slightly tipsy) after a long work week.

Even though Eataly can seem like a big tease with all of it’s authentic gluten-filled wares, it was delicious and fun and surprisingly Celiac friendly.

P.S. – They’re opening a rooftop beer garden this summer.  Woot!

Dean and Deluca’s “Pumpkin Potion”

Yesterday I got my first real dose of Christmas in the city.  We went in to get some ingredients for dinner from Whole Foods, and a little present to send my dad (to make up for abandoning him on Thanksgiving).  But there was so much to see that we ended up making an afternoon of it.  Who can take a quick trip to the grocery store when you get off the train and see this view of Central Park?

So we headed to Dean and Deluca to see if they had anything for my dad, and to give us an excuse to get coffee ourselves.  Usually I kind of hate going there a little bit, because they have all of the best baked goods in the city and I can’t have ANY of it.  So, being in the holiday spirit and all, I opted for the “Pumpkin Potion” made with soy milk.  It’s a blend of something pumpkin, and chai, and I think magic – because this thing was soooooo good.  It made Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks look like car wash hot chocolate (what? they didn’t serve hot chocolate at your car wash?)  It was incredibly frothy, and even though I’m not usually a fan of chai, the spiced and subtle pumpkin flavor was really amazing.  Almost made me not envy the line of people getting cupcakes and pastries.  Almost.

We also got a few of their Origin Chocolate bars, which didn’t make it home whole.  In our defense, it was a long subway ride.  Other gluten free food options at D&D include:

  • Siggi’s Yogurt (I’ve had the Orange Ginger and it was decent)
  • Macaroons (sometimes they have packaged ones, but the sales people will never give me a straight answer about the ones in their display case).  Plus, if you’re in the area you might as well get your macaroons here).
  • Nut mix and cranberry nut mix
  • Soups (they had butternut squash when I went, that is gluten free.  But check for other varieties)
  • Larabars (at the SoHo location, not at the Rockefellar Center location)
  • Tons of candy and artisan chocolates
  • Terra chips and popcorn (at SoHo location)
  • At the SoHo location they also have a lot of prepared foods, sushi (but no soy sauce), cheeses, and fresh fruits and veggies.

On the way there we saw the big tree getting prepped for the lighting in Rockefellar Center. Right now it looks like a construction zone, but soon it will be all gussied up and ready for Christmas.

Apologies for those of you who can’t try the yummies at Dean and Deluca.  For those of you in the city – D&D moved to 48th Street a couple of months ago.  It’s much more discrete now (not even on Google Maps yet):

Peter’s Restaurant – Upper East Side

This weekend, Nick and I did the age-old brunch and Bed Bath and Beyond afternoon.  We decided to walk the Upper East Side, down the route that is the First Avenue finish line for the ING NYC Marathon.  So, it was the perfect time to try out Peter’s Restaurant – which I’ve heard a lot of great reviews about for their gluten free diner food.

First of all, the menu is HUGE.  And almost all of the menu items can be made gluten free (in fact, they have a little icon next to the items which can not be made gluten free, rather than the other way around).  There is a huge selection of dishes for every meal, including gluten free pancakes, waffles, french toast, sandwiches, french fries, multiple varieties of eggs benedict, pasta, and the list goes on and on!

Since it was lunch time I decided to go with something that I can rarely find – a good, old fashioned tuna salad sandwich and fries.

Big Tuna

The tuna was filled with mayo, the coleslaw was covered in it too – just what I was looking for!  Some people balk at the cost ($8.50) for this sandwich, but it was great to feel “normal” and really chow down at Peter’s.

The fries were classic diner fries, really crispy and tender in the middle.  The waiter asked us specifically if we wanted the fries to be gluten-free, so I assume that they use a dedicated fryer.

The only downside to my experience at Peter’s (which for some would be an upside), is that the place was swarming with kids.  There was actually a seven year old girl’s birthday party going on in the restaurant.  And, for anyone who knows seven year olds who are high on sugar, they do not make the best dining companions.  But, if you had kids, I can see how this would be a great place to take them for a relaxed meal with familiar foods.

I will definitely be back to try some of the other things on the menu (cheesecake? salmon eggs benny?  Yes, please!).

Naked Pizza – Miami

This weekend I was in Miami, and had a chance to get some really great gluten free pizza!  Naked Pizza has some really darn fantastic pizza!  It looks like there has been a location awarded to New York City, so there should be one here soon!  While they have a ton of suggestions for pies to get, we decided to build our own.  With a whole load of toppings:

Wacky shot

This shot was taken walking through the Lincoln Road Mall with about a million people dressed up in costume on Halloween.  We finished the whole thing by the time we got back to the car!  Cheddar cheese, spinach, artichokes, fresh basil, garlic, red onion = YUM!

Get some yourself if you’re in Miami, or wait until it comes to your area.  It looks like they’re about to really blow up and expand to a lot of new locations.

Gluten Free Birthday Treats

What a birthday day week this has been!  It was filled with yummy sweets, surprises, and exploring the city.  I’ll give a quick run down of the heaps of goodness that happened:

Monday my coworkers and I celebrated my birthday, and another member of our team’s wedding with a whole table full of gluten free sweets.  My friend made white chocolate, almond, and gluten free pretzel cookies (?), or brittle (?) Chocolate mousse cake, and buckeyes.  I love being able to join in the fun at a work party!  Plus there were tons of extras to keep me fueled up throughout the week.

Tuesday morning, I got woken up with breakfast goodies from Tulu’s Gluten Free Bakery!  A blueberry-cranberry muffin with almond crumb topping and coffee cake!  The muffin was so moist, and I hardly ever treat myself to pastries, so it was a perfect way to start the morning.

The week was filled with more gf finds – like the pop-up food stands at Madison Square Park for their Harvest Market!

Out of the corner of my eye I saw “gluten-free crepes”… did an about-face… and had to get one!  I left not knowing what the place was actually called, but the nice guy making my crepe told me that they had a permanent location at Chelsea Market, so I deduced that it must have been Bar Suzette.  The guy also told me that they were made from rice, lentils, salt, and water – so they should taste similar to sourdough.

The only other time I went to a crepe bar (Good Girls Go to Paris Crepes in Detroit) – they told me that they had tried everything, and couldn’t come up with a way to make good crepes gluten free.  Guess they were wrong!

I got a nutella crepe – which they sprinkle a little sugar on for a little crunch.  Paired with the chewy layers of crepes, it was the perfect “snack”.

Picture of the actual crepe to come!

That night we went back to Pala Pizza for calamari and fungata pizza – which I didn’t take pictures of because my hands were too busy stuffing pizza in my face.  I didn’t like this pizza as much as the last one I got.  This one was a little dry tasting (?).  I don’t know how that’s possible because there was so much cheese on it, but once I asked the waitress for a side of marinara to dunk it in, I was all set.

So many fun times, friends, and good eats this weekend!  Even though I didn’t get to blow out any candles, I can’t think of anything else I could wish for! 🙂

It’s happening! GF Cupcakes in Queens!

Queens is a bit slow to come around to having gluten free options in grocery stores and bakeries.  Mostly because most of the independently-owned shops are family operations that have been around forever, or focus on ethnic or regional specialties.

So, as excited as I was to see a new bakery pop up on Steinway, I was not expecting to see a sign in the window advertising gluten-free cupcake options!  We even joked around saying “Wouldn’t it be cool if they had some gluten free stuff?”  Well, they DO!

Who’s “they”?  Cream Bakery!

The only flavors that they had of the gluten free persuasion were vanilla with chocolate frosting, and chocolate with chocolate frosting.

I wasn’t really in the cupcake mood (I know… so sad).  But I’ll update this post when I try them!

Tu-lu’s Bakery and BBQ Salmon

I made this meal about a month ago, but I’m planning on recreating it this weekend so I thought I’d revisit it.  Pretty soon we’ll be bringing out the fall squashes and apples, so I want to make one more true summer meal.

I’m definitely going to have to go back to Tu-lu’s Gluten Free Bakery in the East Village.  Last time I was there I got a jalapeno cornbread muffin (pictured below), and a white chocolate cranberry oatmeal cookie.  The cornbread was pretty good, but didn’t blow my mind.  Once I slathered some butter on it, it tasted much better.  The cookie was above par though – really chewy and sweet.  They also have a ton of gluten free cupcake options at Tu-lus, that I’m going to put on my list for my next visit.

I think that working at a gluten free bakery would be on my list of dream jobs.  Get up early, bake away in the morning, display all of your creations, then sit in a quiet, sweet-smelling room all day selling to “your people”.  The woman at Tu-lu’s looked so serene and happy in her quiet little shop (although I’m sure she would have preferred it to be bustling with customers).

Back to the meal… last time I picked up a carton of coleslaw from Whole Foods, and then made some barbeque salmon with Naturally Delicious barbeque sauce.  I think I might just do the exact same this weekend.

Note the sweet tea vodka and lemonade in the background.  Jeremiah Weed sweet tea vodka has been my go-to drink this summer – so refreshing and flavorful that it barely needs a mixer.  Someone will have to pry it out of my arms before fall hits so I don’t get sick of it.

St. Pete Beach – Mad Fish

So I know I haven’t posted in a couple of weeks – but it’s kind of hard to blog when you’re basking in the sun, jet-skiing, and drinking rum runners all day.  Nick and I spent four glorious days in St. Pete Beach, FL for the wedding of one of Nick’s friends, and some much needed R&R.  After a quick canceled-flight debacle, we landed safely in paradise.

Isn’t it just dreamy?  The Sirata Beach Resort was so nice, and our room had an ocean view!  We spent hours walking the beach, laying by the pool, and eating some great meals!  I got my fill of grits and cheese grits (like gluten free hot porridge mixed with cheese soup).

The best meal by far was at Mad Fish – a really cool upscale seafood restaurant in a converted diner car.  This place had a really cool vibe – and it was nice to have some alone time with Nick.  And by alone time, I mean I shared him with this giant leaning tower of Pisa of donut onion rings.  Wait, let me repeat myself… DONUT ONION RINGS.  Like your traditional onion ring, but dunked in a donut batter, fried to a crisp, dusted with powdered sugar, and dipped in ketchup.  Nick was raving about these all weekend, telling everyone from his sister to the towncar driver about how mind-blowingly, gluteny-good they were.  One of those times that I wish I could just get rid of this pesky allergy…

In case you need a visual…

Man vs. Food

I, on the other hand, sat through the waitress bringing out one round of buttered bread that smelled amazing (Nick said it tasted like Pizza Hut?).  Then another round of these onion rings.  So by the time my meal got to the table I was ready to dig in.  Good thing the portion was GIGONDO!

I had wanted to try grouper, since it’s a specialty of the region – so I got the grouper and Gulf shrimp in tomato and caper sauce, with garlic risotto.  Mmm….

Gulf shrimp and grouper over garlic risotto

That giant white snowball on top?  That’s parmesan cheese.  The grouper was really flavorful and moist, and the shrimp were extra fresh.  I could only eat about a third of this, but it was worth every penny.

We also heard that the breakfast at Mad Fish is great too.  It’s definitely a must-go if you’re in the area.

Mozzarelli’s – Friday Binge

Last Friday it was gorgeous outside, and I decided to treat myself to a  slice of Mozzarelli’s pizza.  This place is dangerously close to my office, so I try to limit my visits there so I don’t get used to having delicious pizza within walking distance.

Even though there were many cheesy varieties, I settled on the spinach and mushroom slice:

I took this picture while walking, since I couldn’t stop myself from eating it on the way back to the office.  This pizza reminds me so much of my hometown favorite, Jet’s Pizza.  The crust is really crisp and chewy and greasy (but in a good way, to me at least) and then the tomato sauce is really thick, like it’s just tomato paste.  The spinach on this pie is nice and salty and sauteed in olive oil.

So I ordered my pizza, and then I’m browsing around the HUGE selection of desserts while I wait for it to heat up in the oven.

Bad idea… or, incredibly great idea.

They have sooooo many desserts I couldn’t resist!  They have cheesecake, tiramisu, giant brownies, strawberry shortcake, mocha cake, and lots more.

I settled on the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.  Mostly because it had the cutest little icing carrots on top.  Plus everyone in my office had carrot cake last week for a birthday party and I couldn’t have any.

By about 3pm – this is all that was left.  It’s amazing that I got my camera out in time to take a picture at the rate that I was shoveling this cake into my mouth.

LET ME EAT CAKE!

It was delicious.  Moist, lots of frosting, and…most importantly…really, really large.

I kind of felt sick after eating all of this.  But it was worth it.

Get it, girl:

It takes two to Bistango

After deliberating for days over where to go out to dinner on Friday night, we settled on Bistango on 29th and 3rd.  After meeting up with some people at the rooftop at Red Sky for a few overpriced drinks, we headed over to try out some gluten free Italian.  We sat outside, right across from the kind of seedy Tonic bar, but Nick could catch glimpses of the Mets game, so it worked out alright.

To start, I got to eat bread!  Woot!  Usually I get to just sit there and stare at the bread basket, maybe taking a whiff just to taunt myself even more.  I’m not going to rave about the bread, as it really didn’t have that much taste.  If I could have slathered it with butter and jam it probably would have tasted pretty darn good.  But it was bread, and I could eat it, so I won’t complain.

Nick and I split an appetizer of scallops with grilled pineapple:

The scallops were good – cooked perfectly.  But for $13 I expect an army of scallops, not three little babies.  Wouldn’t get this again.

But then, the main event.

I just had to get the gluten free ravioli.  Because, hello, it’s GLUTEN FREE RAVIOLI.  Hot dog!

I got the mushroom and ricotta ravioli with pink sauce:

mamma mia

So delicious.  Nick confirms that you can’t tell that these are gluten free.  The pasta is perfect, not chewy or slimy, just perfect al dente.  The filling is cream and yummy and cheesy.  I could have had seconds and thirds.

Now I’ve just got to find out where they get those ravioli, or how they make them.

Bistango, for the win.

Get some tonight:
